October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Most of the conversation is rightly focused on awareness, screening, treatment, and survival.

But there is another side of a serious diagnosis that families often do not see coming:

**The financial side.**

Health insurance can help with medical bills. It does not replace a paycheck, make the mortgage disappear, cover every trip to a specialist, or keep everyday household expenses from piling up.

That is why a cancer diagnosis can become a financial event as quickly as it becomes a medical one.

## The Bills Do Not Stop When Treatment Starts

A client may have excellent health insurance and still face questions like:

- What happens if I cannot work for six months?
- Who pays the mortgage?
- How do we cover travel for treatment?
- What if my spouse has to reduce work to help me?
- What if I want a second opinion or care outside my local area?
- Do I really want to drain my emergency fund or retirement account?

## That Is Where Living Benefits Change the Conversation

Some life insurance policies include living-benefit riders that may allow the insured to accelerate a portion of the policy's death benefit after a qualifying chronic, critical, or terminal illness, depending on the policy.

Instead of protection that only matters after death, the policy may create access to money while the insured is still alive.

**And cash creates options.**

Depending on the rider and circumstances, certain accelerated death benefits may qualify for favorable federal income-tax treatment under current tax rules. Clients should consult their tax professional regarding their specific situation.

## What Could the Money Help With?

The important question is not simply, “What will health insurance cover?”

It is:

**“What would your family need cash for if your health suddenly interrupted your income?”**

That could include:

- Mortgage or rent
- Groceries and household bills
- Childcare
- Travel and lodging for treatment
- Lost income
- Help for a spouse or family caregiver
- Additional care or services not covered by health insurance

## The Question to Ask This Week

**“If you were diagnosed with cancer tomorrow and could not work for six months, what asset would you want to start liquidating first?”**

Most clients have never been asked that question.

And their answer usually tells you whether their current protection plan is actually built for a health event.

## The Business Idea

Pull ten existing clients with life insurance.

Find out whether their current policies include meaningful living benefits and what actually triggers them.

You are not asking them to replace anything.

You are simply helping answer a better question:

**“If something serious happened to your health, what could this policy do for you while you are still alive?”**

## The Takeaway

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than understanding a diagnosis.

It is also an opportunity to help families think through the financial choices they would want available if a diagnosis ever came.

Life insurance has traditionally answered one question:

**“What happens to my family if I die?”**

Living benefits introduce another:

**“What happens financially if I live through something serious?”**

That may be one of the most important protection conversations you have with a client all year.
