Most protection conversations focus on the cost of treatment.

But for many working families, the bigger financial threat may be the paycheck that disappears during treatment.

## Expenses Keep Moving Even When Income Stops

A serious diagnosis can mean surgery, treatment, recovery, follow-up appointments, and unpredictable days away from work.

For an employee, that may mean reduced income after sick time and disability benefits are exhausted.

For a self-employed client or business owner, the impact can be even more direct.

No work can mean no revenue.

## The Household Still Has a Monthly Number

Clients know what they earn.

They often have not calculated what it would take to keep the household running during a six- or twelve-month health event.

That monthly number may include:

- Mortgage or rent
- Utilities
- Food
- Car payments
- Insurance premiums
- Tuition or childcare
- Debt payments
- Business expenses

## Where Living Benefits Can Fit

Certain life insurance policies include riders that may provide access to part of the death benefit after a qualifying chronic, critical, or terminal illness.

That money may provide another source of liquidity when income is under pressure.

Depending on the rider and circumstances, certain accelerated death benefits may qualify for favorable federal income-tax treatment. Individual tax advice should come from the client's tax professional.

## The Question to Ask This Week

**“How many months could your household operate normally if your paycheck stopped tomorrow?”**

## The Business Idea

Start with your working-age clients, business owners, and self-employed households.

Do not ask whether they have enough life insurance.

Ask whether their current protection plan has an answer for an interruption in income caused by serious illness.

## The Takeaway

Death is not the only event that can threaten a family's financial plan.

Sometimes the client survives—and that is exactly when the family needs cash the most.
