Most clients understand the basic purpose of life insurance.

You die. Your beneficiaries receive a death benefit.

But many clients have never heard the next part:

**Some life insurance policies may provide access to benefits while the insured is still alive.**

## That Is the Basic Idea Behind Living Benefits

Living-benefit riders can allow an insured to accelerate a portion of the policy's death benefit after certain qualifying events.

Depending on the policy, those events may include a qualifying chronic illness, critical illness, or terminal illness.

Every carrier and rider is different, so definitions, triggers, limits, costs, and benefit calculations matter.

## Why Clients Understand This So Quickly

Traditional life insurance answers:

**“What happens financially if I die?”**

Living benefits add another question:

**“What happens financially if I live through something serious?”**

That distinction is easy to remember because clients can immediately picture the problem.

## What Could the Money Be Used For?

When benefits are paid as cash rather than reimbursement for a specific bill, the client may have significantly more flexibility.

Money could potentially help with household bills, lost wages, mortgage payments, travel, childcare, caregiving support, or other needs created by the illness.

Depending on the rider and circumstances, certain accelerated death benefits may qualify for favorable federal income-tax treatment. Clients should review their individual situation with a tax professional.

## What Advisors Should Verify

- Which illnesses or conditions trigger the rider?
- How is the accelerated amount calculated?
- Are there age or state limitations?
- What happens to the remaining death benefit?
- Are there charges, discounts, liens, or other reductions?

## The Question to Ask This Week

**“Do you know whether your current life insurance can pay you anything while you are still alive?”**

## The Business Idea

Pull ten existing life policies and identify which ones have living-benefit riders, which do not, and which need a closer review.

You may find that the easiest new business conversation begins with coverage the client already owns.
