When clients compare insurance benefits, they naturally look at the size of the benefit.

But during a serious illness, another question can matter just as much:

**Who decides how the money gets used?**

## A Health Event Rarely Creates Just One Expense

A cancer diagnosis might create medical bills.

It can also create lost wages, travel expenses, childcare needs, home expenses, caregiving costs, and dozens of smaller financial pressures.

That is why unrestricted or flexible cash can be so valuable.

## Cash Creates Choices

Some living-benefit riders may allow the insured to accelerate a portion of the life insurance death benefit after a qualifying illness.

When the benefit is paid directly to the client, it can give the family flexibility to address the problem they consider most important.

That may be treatment-related.

Or it may simply be keeping the household financially stable while the client recovers.

## Think Beyond the Hospital

Imagine a client who has adequate health insurance but cannot work for four months.

The biggest financial problem may not be the hospital bill.

It may be the mortgage.

Or the business payroll.

Or flying a family member across the country to help.

Or replacing the income of a spouse who becomes a caregiver.

## Important Tax Note

Depending on the rider and circumstances, certain accelerated death benefits may qualify for favorable federal income-tax treatment under current law. Clients should consult their tax professional regarding their specific situation.

## The Question to Ask This Week

**“If a serious illness put $100,000 of cash in your hands, what would you need it for first?”**

The answer tells you more about the client's actual risk than a product brochure ever will.

## The Business Idea

Use that question in your next five client reviews.

You are not starting with insurance.

You are starting with the financial consequences of a health event—and then determining whether the client's current protection matches those consequences.
