Most financial plans include an emergency fund.

Three months of expenses.

Six months if the client wants to be conservative.

That is a smart foundation.

But a serious health event creates a different question:

**What happens if the emergency lasts longer than the emergency fund?**

## A Health Emergency Can Hit Both Sides of the Ledger

Most emergencies do one of two things.

They create a large expense or interrupt income.

A serious illness can do both at the same time.

The client may have new out-of-pocket expenses while also taking time away from work.

## The Six-Month Test

Ask the client to imagine six months with reduced income.

Then add:

- Travel for appointments
- Additional childcare
- Help around the home
- Deductibles and coinsurance
- Support for a spouse or family caregiver
- Unexpected services not fully covered by health insurance

Does the emergency fund still look large enough?

## Protection Can Preserve Savings

Certain life insurance policies include living-benefit riders that may provide access to a portion of the death benefit after a qualifying illness.

That additional liquidity can help prevent the emergency fund from being the only source of cash.

Depending on the rider and circumstances, certain accelerated death benefits may qualify for favorable federal income-tax treatment. Clients should consult their tax professional regarding their individual situation.

## The Question to Ask This Week

**“Is your emergency fund designed for a broken air conditioner—or for six months of cancer treatment and lost income?”**

## The Business Idea

Use the emergency-fund conversation as the bridge into protection planning.

Instead of beginning with a product, stress-test the client's current liquidity first.

If the numbers expose a gap, the protection conversation becomes much easier to understand.
